Shihan Chester Coetzer, 6th Dan, has devoted his life to karate, beginning his journey at the age of four under the guidance of his father, Hanshi Attie Coetzer, 9th Dan. Trained from an early age, Chester quickly developed a passion for the art, growing into a skilled practitioner, dedicated teacher, and role model for all ages.
He began assisting in classes as a child and officially became a Sensei in 2009 after earning his 3rd Dan. With over 16 years of teaching experience, he continues to train and mentor students alongside his father.
A two-time Tenshinkan Karate Japan Champion (2003, 2006), Chester earned his 1st Dan in Japan and later won the Tenshinkan Kancho Championship in South Africa (2016), where he performed alongside World Chief Instructor Kancho Mamoru Miwa. He also claimed back-to-back victories at the SARMAF South African Championships (2022, 2023), and won the German ICO All-Styles Championship in 2024. That same year, he became the youngest practitioner in Tenshinkan Karate South Africa to achieve the rank of 6th Dan.
Chester is passionate about using karate to build confidence, promote discipline, and combat bullying. Together with his father—who serves as World Liaison Officer and South African Chief Instructor—they continue to inspire through their schools and dedication to the values of karate.
Chester’s journey is one of legacy, passion, and lifelong excellence in martial arts.

Head Instructor, Tenshinkan South Gauteng.
I began my journey in karate at the age of nine, but it was in 2003—when I traveled to Japan at 13—that I truly connected with the spirit of the art. Training and grading for my Shodan under Kancho Miwa in Japan was a life-changing experience. It taught me that karate is not only about physical movement but also about culture, discipline, and heart.
In 2009, I took over Tenshinkan South Gauteng, becoming one of the youngest female instructors in the region. Since then, it has been my mission to share this art with as many students as possible—especially young girls who find confidence and empowerment through their practice.
Today, I have the joy of teaching in Randburg alongside my sister, Sensei Monique. In 2024, after years of hard work—and just months after welcoming my first child—I was honored to be awarded my 6th Dan and the title of Shihan. I remain committed to nurturing future generations of karateka with integrity, compassion, and strength.
I began my martial arts journey in February 1995 under Sensei Robby Du Preez at the Springs Indoor Centre. I later moved to the current DOJO to continue my training.
In 2007, I relocated to Benoni, where I served as an assistant sensei while also advancing my own training, including in Kobudo, where I achieved the rank of Shodan.
Since 2020, I’ve proudly served as the head Sensei, leading and mentoring the next generation of martial artists.
